    Mittal’s ArcelorMittal Invests US$20 Million In Brazil Steel Plant

    Luxembourg-based steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal, led by billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, is reportedly planning a R$50-million (US$20-million) investment in Sabará of Brazil’s Minas Gerais state to expand its capacity at its long steel plant, according to Business News Americas.

    The investment focus will be on the purchase of high-tech equipment for the production of peeled steel bars, which is a new niché for the company.

    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih opens warehouse in western Ukraine

    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian subsidiary of global steel giant ArcelorMittal, has announced that it has opened a warehouse for steel products in Ternopil in western Ukraine. From its new storage yard, its fourth in Ukraine, the company has already delivered the first one hundred tons of steel products. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih's warehouse in Ternopil has a full range of the steel products which the plant produces.

    ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has opened the new warehouse in the western region in line with its strategy of developing its own distribution network, which the company started to implement in 2013. The new storage yard of the plant can hold 2,000 metric tons of steel products, while it occupies an area of 1,500 square meters. The warehouse in Ternopil has a crane with a carrying capacity of up to 20 metric tons, its own railroad spur and also the possibility of trucking services.

    Settlement Reached With U.S. Steel, ArcelorMittal in Price-Fixing Lawsuit

    More litigation has come to a close regarding an alleged price-fixing lawsuit involving major players in the steel industry.

    In 2008, Pennsylvania-based Standard Iron Works and 4 other companies filed a lawsuit alleging U.S. Steel and ArcelorMittal conspired with 6 other domestic steel manufacturers “to manipulate the supply and price of steel products sold in the United States,” according to court documents. The plaintiffs alleged that, from April 1, 2005 to December 31, 2007, the 8 steelmakers “conspired to restrict their output, thereby increasing the prices they were able to charge for steel products.”

    ArcelorMittal makes top 20 of Aon Hewitt Top Companies for Leaders list

    ArcelorMittal, the world's biggest steelmaker, has been ranked 14th on the 2014 global Aon Hewitt Top Companies for Leaders list.

    “With nearly 180 organisations participating in this year’s Aon Hewitt study, ArcelorMittal was selected as a result of our continued commitment to developing a strong and effective talent and leadership pipeline” said Brian Callaghan, the steelmaker's vice president of leadership development.

    Callaghan said that leadership was crucial in developing any kind of culture, but claimed it was particularly important where high performance was crucial. "And that means increasing leadership capability at all levels of the company, not just at the top of the organisation,” he said.

    ArcelorMittal was selected as one of only seven Top Companies for Leaders in Europe by Aon Hewitt in 2011. However, following further improvement and integration of leadership policies, the company has now been ranked in Aon Hewitt’s global listing.

    The Aon Hewitt Top Companies for Leaders study explores how organisations assess, select, develop and reward leaders, and examines the execution of leadership practices as well as the strategy that guides it. This year's winners were selected and ranked by an expert panel of independent judges based on a number of criteria, including strength of leadership practices and culture, examples of leader development on a global scale, alignment of business and leadership strategy, company reputation, business and financial performance.

    According to Pete Sanborn, Aon Hewitt's global talent practice leader, "Top Companies for Leaders are passionate about cultivating resilient and engaging leaders who take the time to know and develop their talent and understand what experiences they need to rise above the rest.”

    ArcelorMittal and Italy Marcegaglia steel plans to acquire Italy IIva MillsIt is reported that ArcelorMittal and Italy Marcegaglia steel group planned to submit a nonbinding offer to buy Italy IIva Mills and it also included Genoa and Novi Ligure rolling mills and located in Italy Taranto along with annual steel production capacity of 11.2 million tons. 

    If the offer would keep the employees from IIva Taranto steel mill, currently employs have 11,000 people, 1750 people in Genoa and 800 people in Novi Ligure mill respectively.

    Chinese staal bederft groei Europese staalsector

    Ondanks de zwakke conjunctuur en de overcapaciteit vertoont de Europese staalmarkt herstel. Echter, de import uit Rusland, Oekraïne en voornamelijk China zorgt voor prijsdruk. Het maakt het moeilijker voor de Europese staalproductie te profiteren van de groeiende vraag in Europa. Een ton gewalst staal kostte in 2008 nog 1.200 dollar, nu nog maar 520 dollar.

    ThyssenKrupp haalde voor het eerst in drie jaar weer zwarte cijfers. Maar de omzet van Steel Europe daalde eind september met 3%, voornamelijk door lagere verkoopprijzen. Volumes gaan juist gemiddeld genomen omhoog, net als bij ArcelorMittal. Tata Steel Europe had het derde kwartaal meer afzet, maar kon weinig zeggen over de omzet en winst. Vanwege de slechte huizenmarkt in China werd veel staal geëxporteerd. `De Chinese export steeg in de eerste helft van 2014 40%. Die naar Europa nam toe met meer dan 30%`, aldus Martin Theuringer, economisch directeur van de Duitse Wirschafts Vereinigung Stahl.

    China heeft lagere milieu- en kwaliteitseisen en komt niet alle internationale handelsafspraken na. De Chinese staalproductie is sinds 2008 bijna verdubbeld (828 miljoen ton nu). In oktober exporteerde het land 8,55 miljoen ton staal.
