He has led innovation efforts, including those related to Dolby's technological roadmaps and standards development for DVD and BluRay. He has experience in nurturing new technologies in an incubator-like environment and in growing new businesses, including as President of Via Licensing Corporation, a Dolby subsidiary.

"Ramzi has the perfect blend of technology savvy, business leadership and innovation experience to head our cutting-edge technologies business," said Rajeev Suri, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia. "With Ramzi at the head of the world-class Nokia Technologies team and our continuing investment in advanced research and development, we are well-positioned to drive the innovation and licensing business needed to move us closer to our goal of technology leadership in a world where everyone and everything is connected."

"I relish the opportunity to head Nokia's ground-breaking technologies business with its track record of innovation and team of hundreds of world-class scientists and engineers. These experts have driven more than half of Nokia's recent patent filings and are leaders in fields that are essential for enabling the connected world."

Born in Lebanon, Haidamus moved at the age of 17 to the US, where he completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering at the University of the Pacific.

Henry Tirri, who has served as acting head of Nokia Technologies business since its formation on May 1, 2014, will continue in this role until Haidamus joins on September 3, 2014. From that date, Tirri will step down from the Group Leadership Team and will become an advisor to Suri on technology issues.

"We are grateful to Henry for all his work for Nokia over the years and for his willingness to lead the Nokia Technologies team during an important time of change and transition," said Suri. "Henry has graciously agreed to support Ramzi as he transitions into the company. Telefónica modernizes, expands its radio network in Spain with Nokia Networks

Three-year agreement includes complete upgrade of current network, 4G implementation

    July 24 2014

Madrid, Spain – Telefónica, one of the world's leading providers of telecommunications, is modernizing its nationwide networks and expanding its 4G network to significantly improve performance and capacity in Spain. The operator has selected Nokia Networks as key supplier for radio access equipment and professional services in Andalusia, Galicia, Castilla Leon and Levante over a period of three years.

“Our customers are increasingly adopting advanced smartphones and enjoying data-heavy multimedia content, so delivering more services while improving their quality is more important than ever,” said Joaquín Mata at Telefónica. “This modernization, one of the greatest of the kind ever carried out in Spain, will allow us to achieve these goals and optimize the performance of our network to offer the best possible user experience.”

Nokia Networks will upgrade Telefónica’s mobile network and implement 4G using its Single RAN Advanced solution, based on the compact, scalable Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, recently ranked a leader in capacity and deployment flexibility by the analyst firm Current Analysis*. The company will also deliver its Multicontroller Platform for the 3G Radio Network Controller (RNC) to further increase efficiency and resilience. Telefónica’s networks will be monitored, managed and optimized by Nokia’s NetAct management system.

As part of the agreement, Nokia Networks will also provide Customer Experience Management, including its Serve atOnce Traffica real-time monitoring platform, Serve atOnce Intelligence (SAI) reporting solution and Customer Care Automation solution.

Support services comprise network implementation, planning and optimization as well as a full set of care services to secure a high quality, high availability network.

“The ongoing growth of data traffic is creating massive pressure on networks, which have to meet the demands of an increasing number of mobile devices and technologies,” said Agustín Menchén at Nokia Networks. “As a frontrunner in mobile broadband, we are committed to helping Telefónica build an advanced network infrastructure that reaffirms its leadership as an operator that constantly evolves and adapts to new technology.”

Nokia Networks first to trial LTE for national TV broadcasting

    July 29, 2014

Espoo, Finland – Nokia Networks is pioneering the technology needed to efficiently use LTE for nationwide TV broadcasting. The company is working with a range of partners* in the world’s first field trial of wide-area TV broadcasting using a single LTE frequency within UHF spectrum. In a Single Frequency Network (SFN) all base stations use exactly the same frequency to transmit TV content, which maximizes the number of simultaneous TV channels broadcast over a large geographical area in a given amount of spectrum.

LTE Broadcast** technology promises new revenue sources for operators by distributing TV over existing mobile broadband infrastructure. Subscribers would be able to watch TV on their devices without eating into their mobile data plan and independent of network load. LTE Broadcast allows for a free-to-air or pay-TV service that can be received by anybody with a suitable device, similar to traditional TV broadcasting. Broadcasters and content providers could extend their reach to mobile users and open the door for a multitude of interactive services.

“Today, when watching videos over a mobile network, the content is individually streamed to each user. With LTE Broadcast the same signal is received by many users at the same time, resulting in more efficient capacity and spectrum use,” said Hossein Moiin, chief technology officer, Nokia Networks. “Spectrum doesn’t need to be dedicated to either broadcast or broadband, but can be used flexibly for both according to users’ needs. We believe that LTE Broadcast is a technology well suited to distribute TV and broadcast services and will help us expand the benefits of mobile internet to everyone while evolving the TV viewing experience.”

Current LTE Broadcast applications focus on delivering media content to contained locations, such as stadiums and concert halls, over limited periods of time. The Munich trial is the first to apply the technology on UHF spectrum, using part of the 700 MHz band*** to broadcast over a 200 km2 area. To maximize the efficiency of the LTE Broadcast, the SFN has been optimized for tighter synchronization of neighbor cells to increase interference robustness. The trial aims to show that LTE could be used to complement and in the long run, even provide another option to regional digital TV distribution standards, such as DVB-T in Europe.

The trial, which began transmissions in early July in Munich, Germany, uses evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (eMBMS) software running in Nokia Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations, which are deployed widely in many LTE networks worldwide. The Nokia LTE equipment is deployed at four sites of the Bavarian broadcast company, Bayerischer Rundfunk, in Northern Munich. The sites are connected by a high performance optical transport network
